Frequently asked questions

What is Hypnobirthing?

Hypnobirthing is a childbirth process that focused on preparing parents for a gentle physiological birth. In Hypnobirthing classes, you will learn techniques such a deep relaxation, visualisations, affirmatios, breathing and self hypnosis. These are designed to enhance your birth experience and encourages a calm, peaceful and natural pregnancy and birth experience for all involved

How will the birth partner be involved?

The birth partner of your choice is an important part of your hypnobirthing experience. Your birth partner will practice with you to prepare you body for dep relaxation. During labour, your partner can guide you through your hypnosis prompts, relaxation techniques, deepeing methods and visualisations, provide comfort measures, and join you in welcoming your new baby. They can also protect the birth space and advocate for your birth wishes

Will I be unconscious or will I forget my birth experience?

Despite misconceptions and misinformation, you're not unconscious during self hypnosis. When you're hypnobirthing, you'll be deeply relaxed, but will also be active and participating in your labour. Though you may be relaxed, you'll be aware and mey return to a conversant state or choose to become mobile whenever you desire. We find that hypnobirthing mothers often experience time distortion. They're not distracted by people or their envoroment and stay focused on their birth

Will the online course be better for me?

Learing occurs optimally in the context of a good relationship. At True Focus Hypnobirthing, the classes are face-to-face by a trained midwife / Hypobirthing practitioner. Many women have commented on the level of support they recieved during the course and the difference it made to their birth, particulare about their confidence and having any misconceptions or concerns clarified during the course. However, with todays busy lifestyles and diverse work arrangements, hypnobirthing can be successfully completed online, and may tick many boxes for alot of couples. Online courses do not replace face-to-face contact however may suit you is you cant attend a face to face class due to work commitments or living is a remote / rural area. If you feel the onlienc ourse is more suited to your needs, please contact Laura directly for more information

What if my doctor or midwife is not familiar with hypnobirthing?

Most care providers are aware of the benefits of hypnobirthing classes. If your caregiver is not knowledgeable about hypnobirthing, take the opportunity early in your pregnancy to discuss the techniques you'll be using and the type of calm birth environment that you desire. You'll learn how to create a a birth plan in your classes which will allow you to communicate your prefrences to your doctor or midwife during your labour. Alternatively, you are well withing your birthing rights to change care providers, or find a care provider who is familiar and in favour of hypnobirthing.

When should I attend Hypnobirthing classes?

You can begin hypnobirthing any time, but we recommend that the optimal time to start your course is between 20 and 30 weeks. This will give you time to practise the self-hypnosis, relaxation and other effective techniques for gentle, easy birthing but also ensures that the course is still fresh in your mind. If you are outside of that range please don’t worry, you can definitely still attend the classes and achieve a beautiful, calm birth. Please contact Laura directly about options if you are further along in your pregnancy.

How do Hypnobirthing Australia™ classes differ from other childbirth education?

Ultimately, the choice is yours. The Hypnobirthing Australia™ course is very comprehensive in natural childbirth education. Hospital antenatal courses often cover a lot of information about interventions and medical procedures during birth. In hypnobirthing we learn all about the birth process, what to expect during pregnancy/the onset of labour/birthing, how to release any fears associated with birthing and we learn techniques (relaxation, breathing, visualisations and deepening exercises) to use during labour. Having said that, we are of the belief that ‘knowledge is power’ and the knowledge that you will gain through antenatal classes, along with your hypnobirthing classes, can help you to make informed decisions. So ultimately, the choice is yours whether you choose to attend just our course, or both.

Are Hypnobirthing Australia™ classes appropriate for VBAC (Vaginal birth after caesarean) or elective caesarean birth?

Yes! Hypnobirthing Australia™ classes are appropriate for all birth types. If you are planning and elective caesarean, there is a specific Hypnobirthing Australia™ course for this. Please contact Laura for more information

Should I still attend hospital antenatal education classes?

The choice is youre. Hypnobirthing Australia™ courses are very comprehensive and provide a lof of information acrosse the gestational period so hospital classes aren't 100% necessary. However, you may feel the need to attend hospital classes to elaborate / expand in the information provided through hypnobithing, such as breastfeeding and hospital tours etc.

What should I bring to classes?

I highly recommend you attend with your birth partner or support person, whether this be your partner / husband, mum, doula or best friend. However, if this is not feasible then you are welcome to attend alone. You are not required to bring anything to your classes, as all course materials are provided. However, I highly recommed bringing a drink bottle, your favourite pillow for meditation sessions and wear comfortable clothes. Tea and coffee and light refreshments are provided.

How will Hypnobirthing allow me to overcome my fear of childbirth?

Hypnobirthing is a calm, positive and natural approach to childbirth. It is about elimination the fears you may have about childbirth through the use of meditation and replacing them with positivity. The Hypnobirthing Australia™ program will empower you and your birth partner and provide you with knowledge, tools, support and preparation so you can confidently make the correct informed decisions. Hypnobirthing Australia™ puts you in the drivers seat, to be in control of your birth and provides valuable tools to help stay calm and relaxed. This allows the body to release positive hormones (endorphins) and allows nature to do what it intended, thus remove the need for medical intervention. These tools will allow your body and baby to work together and do the job they are designed to do.

Are the tools and techniques learnt only for use during birth?

No. The techniques you will learn are tools for life. Not only will they be of benefit to you during your labour and birth, but you will also be able to utilise them in any situation that life throws at you.

How much does the Hypnobirthing Australia™ course cost?

The Hypnobirthing Australia™ course is 12 hours in length, broken into 4x 3 hour classes. The full private course is $750; The full group course is $550; and the refresher for those who have previously completed the full course is $270. Online options are also available

What if things aren't completely 'natural' ?

You are preparing for a calm, natural birth and are willing to calmly meed whatever turn your birthing takes. That is Hypnobirthing as it is meant to be. Regardless of how your baby comes into the world, you will always know in your heart that you gave your baby the best birth possible with the circumstances you were given.

Will Hypnobirthing take away the pain?

We don’t promise no pain, but you will be able to manage any discomforts beautifully, and we try not to use the word pain, as pain generally denotes that something is wrong. We use a combination of evidence-based practices that have been shown to be effective in making labour and birth more comfortable and manageable. Think of Hypnobirthing Australia™ as providing you with a tool box full of wonderful, proven methods of being in control of your labour and birth.
